Goodness gracious....

....great balls of ICE!

Yesterday morning, Wichitan's enjoyed a show put on by Mother Nature, as she had dotted the landscape with lots (and I mean LOTS) of little ice balls. They were very small, and nicely rounded hail stones. There was lots of them, and it was quite a sight to see. I had heard it hitting the window, roof and street during the night. As I opened my door to go to work, this is what I saw - and as my car rolled over it - I could hear the ice crunching under the tires.

Wichita sometimes gets large hail storms, that do damage to the trees, windows, roofs, cars, and more. Hail can sometimes be as large as golf, tennis, baseball, and softballs. But, this little storm was harmless and a spectacular sight. This photo shows the density of coverage, but it doesn't show a good focused shot of the little balls. I'll post a macro of them - tomorrow.

Danger, danger. Don't get bopped on your head.

Glad this hail was small. I have seen baseball size hail one time...back in 1982 right here at the house. I was cowered in the hall watching it bounced off the roof through a bedroom window. By the time it was over and I got outside with my camera, it had evaporated to golf-ball size, but the whole neighborhood was in a steaming fog.

I would rather have now than ice. Not fun.

I think this was more sleet than hail. Did you hear the thunder too? We didn't get any of the moisture out here (32 miles outside Wichita) but I did hear the thunder. Took a minute to realize that was what it was, very unusual for this time of year.

Those are murder to drive on too. The tiny ones don't squash like bigger ones. It is snowing here this morning but no where near what they forecast. At least not yet.

I like your photography.

We had some stuff like that about a week ago and now we've got lots of bright sunshine.

We haven't had hail in a while around here. Sometimes it is big enough to do some serious auto and roof damage.
