... I wonder why they didn't fly south for the winter, or maybe they did, and came back too soon. They looked so cute with their puffed up feathers.

Not all birds fly south. Some stay here year round. When I went out back to take garbage to the mulch bin I scared a bird out of it's warm spot on the ground by my shed. I think these in your pic are sparrows. Here's a tree sparrow...

The house sparrow didn't seem to have as much color.
I think they are confused because of the weather. We were at 88 yesterday and will have a hard freeze tomorrow night, at least thats what they are telling us this morning. ICK.
